кратка интелектуална автобиография

Започнах академичния си живот в Оксфордския университет с бакалавърска (1954-7) и завършила (1957-9)   степени по философия и след това диплом по богословие (1959-60). По време на студентския си период развих постоянния си интерес към всички основни проблеми на философията и особено към въпроса дали има адекватно оправдание за вярата в Бог, и по-специално в доктрините на християнската религия. (Аз съм християнин през целия си живот и член на православната църква от 1995 г.) Разглеждах постиженията на науките като основни за съвременния светоглед; и така (финансиран от две изследователски стипендии – стипендия Fereday в колежа „Сейнт Джонс“, Оксфорд и стипендия Leverhulme по история и философия на науката в Университета в Лийдс) посветих следващите три  години да научат много за историята на физическите и биологичните науки и да започнат да философстват за тях. През 1963 г. станах преподавател по философия в университета в Хъл.    Почти цялата ми работа през следващите девет години беше свързана с философията на науката. Първата ми книга „ Пространство и време“ е публикувана през 1968 г. и има за цел да даде отчет на същността на пространството и времето в светлината на подробните постижения на теорията на относителността и космологията. Следващата ми мащабна книга „Въведение в теорията на потвърждението“ се занимаваше с формализирането чрез вероятностното смятане на това, което е доказателство за какво.  Преместването ми да бъда професор по философия в Университета в Кийл през 1972 г. съвпадна с изместване на академичния фокус към философията на религията, по която досега бях   публикувал само една малка книга „Концепцията за чудото“ (1971).   Следващите дванадесет години публикуваха моята трилогия за философията на теизма – Кохерентността на теизма (1997, преработено издание, 1993), Съществуването на Бог (1979, 2- ро издание 2004) и Вяра и разум (1981, 2- ро издание 2005 г.).   Централната работа „Съществуването на Бог“,се опита да възстанови „естествената теология“, като предостави вероятностни аргументи от общите черти на света до съществуването на Бог; и това е постижението, с което съм най-известен. Работата ми в началото на 1980 г. върху връзката между ума и тялото видя публикувана форма първо в Personal Identity (в съавторство със Сидни Шумейкър, 1984); и по-пълно в „Еволюция на душата“ (1986, преработено издание, 1997).   През 1985 г. станах професор по философия на християнската религия в Оксфордския университет. През следващите осемнадесет години работата ми беше   фокусирана върху значението и обосновката на доктрините, които отличават християнството от другите религии, и тази работа видя публикувана форма в четири книги – Отговорност и Единение  , (1989), Откровение (1992; 2- ро издание, 2007), Християнският Бог (1994) и Провидението и проблемът на злото (1998). Епистемично оправдание , изследване на онова, което представлява оправданието на вярата (и какво представлява знанието), е публикувано през 2001 г. Въплътеното Божие въплъщение   беше изследване с помощта на цялата ми минала работа върху това какво е доказателство за какво, от доказателствата за телесното Възкресение на Исус, беше публикувано през 2003 г. Тъй като Възкресението на Исус дава съществена основа за вярване на много от подробните твърдения на Християнска доктрина, това беше необходимо последно парче от моята извинителна програма. След пенсионирането ми от професията Nolloth през 2002 г., голяма част от работата ми е посветена на издаването на 2- ри издания (до голяма степен пренаписани и актуализирани) на предишни произведения – „Съществуването на Бог“ (2004) , „Вяра и разум“ (2005), „ Откровение“ (2007) ) и Кохерентността на теизма(2016) .. Написал съм и две кратки „популярни“ книги, обобщаващи работата ми по философията на религията? Има ли Бог? (1996) и Исус Бог ли беше ? (2008). През следващите пет години работих отново по въпроса за връзката на духа и тялото и също така по свързания въпрос дали хората имат свободна воля и значението за нея от скорошната неврология. Тази работа доведе до нова книга „ Ум, мозък и свободна воля“, публикувана през 2013 г., в която твърдя, че всички хора се състоят от две части – душа (основна част) и тяло (непредвидена част) и че вероятно имаме свободна воля (от неопределен вид). През следващите две години работих главно по второто издание (до голяма степен пренаписано и актуализирано) наСъгласуваността на теизма , публикувана през 2016 г. Тази книга се стреми да представи последователен разказ за това какво означава „Има Бог“ (и така разглежда какво е съществото да бъде всемогъщо, всезнаещо, съвършено добро и т.н.), което е пролегомен на моите аргументи в полза на съществуване на Бог. Оттогава съм писал статии на различни философски теми и съм написал по-„популярна“ книга със заглавие „Ние ли сме тела или души“? , обобщавайки и развивайки моите възгледи за природата на душата и нейната връзка с тялото, което беше публикувано през 2019 г. .. Бях избран за член на Британската академия през 1993 г. В продължение на много години имах гостуващи професури в американски и други задгранични университети и изнасях лекции за по-кратки периоди в много различни страни. Удостоен съм с почетни доктори от Католическия университет в Люблин. (2015 г.), от християнския университет „Димитри Кантемир“, Букурещ (2016 г.) и от Международната философска академия, Лихтенщайн (2017 г.).
